Correction: Zone 5 Gets Middle School Through Gerrymandering

Jody Carreiro, current Little Rock School Board member (Zone 5) and former president, correctly pointed out a mistake in my most recent blog post and letter to the board, which has since been corrected.

As a result of the board’s most recent gerrymandering, opposed by Mr. Carreiro, Greg Adams (Zone 4) and Melanie Fox (then Zone 3), Henderson Magnet Middle School has been drawn into the eastern border of Zone 5.

So…

Only six of the Little Rock School District’s 49 schools are in Zones 4 and 5 (West Little Rock). That means 28% of the population is only served by 12% of the schools. Zone 4, with only three elementary schools, remains the area most distant from both middle and high schools. And Zones 4 and 5 are, by far, the most underserved in the district.

While Mr. Carreiro and I don’t always see eye-to-eye (in the same email, he termed our actions as “baiting the news media into more stories”), I appreciate his continued service, consideration and response.
